If you’re going to do a mental health check-in with your students, don’t ask students to reveal information about their mental health in front of the rest of the class. The best way to do these check-ins is either one-on-one or through a written survey. Also, be prepared to follow-up with individual students.
Aiming to change this, teachers across the country are creating “Mental Health Check-in” boards that allow struggling students to get the support they need. Like a traditional wall chart you'd find in a classroom, these colorful boards are intended for children to interact with.
Year after year, the students arriving in my classroom are exhibiting more signs of mental health problems. From anxiety to depression to anger, I've seen it all and over the years have developed some great ways to support mental health in the classroom. Throughout my career, I've taught students from Grade 2 to 6.
If you are going to ask students to be open about their mental health problems, make sure you have a plan in place in the event of a mental health emergency. In other words, a check-in conversation is just the first step. 10 Mental Health Check-In Questions for Students
