The onset of acute pain can be slow or sudden. The main difference between acute and chronic pain is that acute pain has an anticipated resolution, with the pain lasting less than three months. The most common cause of acute pain is damage to the body tissues.
Common types of chronic pain include: Arthritis, or joint pain. Back pain. Neck pain. Cancer pain near a tumor. Headaches, including migraines. Testicular pain (orchialgia). Lasting pain in scar tissue. Muscle pain all over (such as with fibromyalgia ).
Chronic pain is usually caused by an initial injury, such as a back sprain or pulled muscle. It’s believed that chronic pain develops after nerves become damaged. The nerve damage makes pain more intense and long lasting. In these cases, treating the underlying injury may not resolve the chronic pain.
It is not known whether these disorders share a common cause. Medications, acupuncture, local electrical stimulation, and brain stimulation, as well as surgery, are some treatments for chronic pain. Some physicians use placebos, which in some cases has resulted in a lessening or elimination of pain.
